The top 5 things you do NOT need for your new baby!

Every book, magazine article and blog post about nesting has some kind of getting ready for baby checklist, these range from basic to elaborate. Ultimately your purchases are up to you, but here are my top 5 useless baby items to avoid!

1. Baby Shoes

Why Not: While they may be cute, your baby does not know how to walk and the opinion that shoes help give them structure and balance to learn this skill is primarily a myth. At best baby shoes tend to be ill-fitting, uncomfortable and get lost easily.

2. Baby Towels

Why Not: The towels marketed for baby are mostly thin and un-absorbant. Adult sized towels are better for keeping baby warm after a bath.

3. Decorative Bibs

Why Not: These are like baby jewelry, they really serve no purpose, they are not rubber backed or large enough to actually use during feeding and often get lost in the laundry shuffle after the first wash. If the outfit comes with it great, but don’t waste your time and money trying to buy these to go with each outfit.

4. Wipe Warmer

Why Not: First of all no child has ever been harmed by using cold wipes, secondly they cool off almost immediately after removing them from the warmer, so unless you enjoy extra space being used up and a higher light bill skip it.

5. Misc. Wipes

Why Not: In this category falls boogie wipes, pacifier wipes etc., trust me these will fall to the bottom of your diaper bag never to be seen again and you will use your regular wipes for everything.

The bottom line, if you are nesting on a budget then try to logically think through the usefulness and practicality of each item. Look for items that can do double duty and will be useful after your baby is no longer a baby!
